Position Title: Senior Linux Administrator

Hybrid:  Two days on site and three days remote

The Senior Linux Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, and opHybrid: Two days on site and three days remotetimization of enterprise Linux environments. This role ensures the stability, security, and performance of mission-critical systems while supporting infrastructure modernization, cloud initiatives, and automation efforts. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in Linux systems, strong troubleshooting skills, and experience in complex, high-availability environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage complex, enterprise-level Linux environments with a focus on system performance, security, automation, and infrastructure stability
  • Administer, install, configure, and maintain physical and virtual Linux servers and operating systems (e.g., Red Hat, Oracle Linux, Ubuntu)
  • Design and implement highly available, scalable, and secure Linux infrastructure
  • Monitor system performance, availability, and capacity; conduct capacity planning and proactively resolve issues
  • Perform system patching, upgrades, vulnerability remediation, and baseline configuration management in compliance with security standards
  • Implement security policies, system hardening, patching, and user access management (e.g., LDAP, sudoers)
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools (Bash, Python, Perl, Ansible, Puppet, Chef) to streamline repetitive tasks and scale infrastructure
  • Design and implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) frameworks (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) to automate provisioning and configuration of infrastructure
  • Implement and support automation pipelines for infrastructure deployment and updates
  • Support migration of Linux-based systems from on-premises environments to AWS
  • Support configuration and deployment of AWS compute, storage, and networking services
  • Provide support for cloud-based Linux environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, OCI)
  • Support data center infrastructure, including storage systems (SAN/NAS) and hybrid cloud environments
  • Manage virtualization and containerized environments (e.g., VMware, Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Implement and manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions
  • Diagnose and resolve complex hardware, software, and network issues
  • Work with development and application teams to support CI/CD pipelines, application deployments, and system integrations
  • Collaborate with network, database, and application teams to support integrated system operations
  • Maintain system documentation, configurations, and standard operating procedures
  • Support compliance efforts (e.g., FISMA, NIST, STIGs) and participate in audits
  • Lead or contribute to infrastructure modernization and migration initiatives
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior administrators

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 8–12+ years of experience administering Linux systems in enterprise environments
  • Strong experience with Linux distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle Linux, or Ubuntu
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (Bash, Python, Ansible, or similar tools)
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and infrastructure deployment
  • Experience with system monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana)
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, LDAP, firewalls)
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, KVM)
  • Strong understanding of security best practices and system hardening
  • Experience with patch management and configuration management tools
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex system and performance issues
  • Strong communication and documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal or government environments
  • Knowledge of compliance frameworks such as FISMA, NIST, and DISA STIGs
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation)
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with container orchestration platforms (e.g., Kubernetes, OpenShift)
  • Linux certifications (e.g., RHCSA, RHCE, CompTIA Linux+)
  • Experience with identity and access management solutions (e.g., Active Directory integration, SSSD)

Work Environment

  • Hybrid work model: 2 days per week on site at client location
  • May require occasional additional onsite presence based on project phases (e.g., testing, go-live, or workshops)
